CHAPTER 4

This conversation was heading in a dangerous direction.

Hannah rolled her shoulders back and hissed with as much indignation as she could muster, “My arrangement with Mr. Harris is solely a business transaction.”

“Pardon?” Twisting toward Hannah, Sean arched an eyebrow.

“She owns half of the bar, nothing more,” Merrick replied. His eyes passed over Hannah. They offered no comfort.

Rubbing the gun against his temple, Sean paced for several minutes. He checked to ensure the front door was secured, then circled past the storage room, muttering to himself, his mouth pulled into a frown. Leaping onto the stool next to Hannah, Sean pointed the gun at her chest and shook his head.

“I just don’t believe you.”

Hannah’s mouth popped open with a squeak. “Why?”

“I was in your house, Annie. I slept in your bed, ate your food, read your emails, and according to your computer, you’ve been messaging this ass,”—he flicked the gun at Merrick—“for two weeks. Quite personal things, I might add. Not to mention the fact he took you upstairs roughly an hour ago. Would you care to revise your statement?”

“No.” Hannah glanced at Merrick. His eyes mirrored her own sentiments—fear. “You have the wrong person.”

“Oh, I think I have the right one.” Sean leaned closer, dragging the muzzle of the gun down her cheek. He whispered intimately. “Where is it, Annie? Where is the flash drive John sent you?”

“Who’s John?”

Pain radiated through her jaw when Sean smacked her with the butt of the gun. His eyes narrowed. “Don’t make me ask you again.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Hannah replied, blood dribbling from her lips.

“Sit. Down.” The command echoed through the room. Hannah’s head whipped up as Merrick dropped back into his chair, his tense body reluctant to fold itself into a sitting position.

“Annie, focus.” Sean’s soft voice drew Hannah’s attention, and she returned her gaze to his taunting face. “We were discussing the flash drive, remember? The one your brother mailed to you. I must admit, it was quite ingenious of him to send it by post.”

He brushed his lips across her forehead. Hannah shuddered.

“I’ve been watching you, Annie, watching you for quite some time now. Could you feel me out there in the darkness? I had almost given up hope, then the envelope arrived.” Sean laughed, his mirthless voice sending shivers down Hannah’s spine. “John didn’t even trust his own captain. Just you, his innocent baby sister. I thought it would be easy, stage another break-in, kill another Blaine, no big deal, but you surprised me. I didn’t expect you to run.”

“How did you know I was here?” Hannah licked her lips.

Had she caused Ian’s death? If she had been truthful with Merrick from the moment she arrived, would things have been different? They could have been prepared.

Her eyes dropped to Ian’s immobile form.

“With both your father and brother dead, I knew John would only trust one person—Mick. I must say, I was quite impressed with your escape route. I hadn’t considered your ingenuity.” He leaned closer and wrapped his hand through her hair.
